Module 1

Taking the time to explore the digital options for educators out there can be overwhelming and time consuming. This week I explored the subscriptions I belong to on Youtube and created my own channel. I didn't think I would ever need my own channel but it will save me time next year when I am searching for the same videos. I was glad to see Blogger on our first module if only because I was familiar with it and have used blogs recently in my classroom. The blog offers both content and peer interaction while we are reading and responding  to a common reading assignment. One goal I have for myself is to maintain one site, blog, resource place to house all my content resources but I am not positive about the format. I would like to get kids using their ipads for more than taking notes though or for producing presentations. This class is the first step in that direction.  My digital education will benefit from the students in my class as we try these formats and develop their skills together.

While I agree with Ken Kay that we want our students to “look at material they've never seen before and know what to do with it” I would hasten to add that we want them to think critically about where they get their information and at the author(s) and the validity of the information. Often times I feel as though we are teaching them independent thought for the first time. As if they are so accustomed to having someone else do the thinking for them.  I wonder if we have done a disservice to this generation of students by leveling the playing field in schools. We have effectively removed all the competition in schools which can fuel a desire to succeed even when the odds are not in favor. Healthy competition teaches   them to sell themselves and to strive to perform better.

  1. I see an important tech goal in here, Sarah, in that you would like a repository online for those digital resources you have found useful in your work. That would include your YT channel and any playlists you create there for topical study. Your Google Site can be that archive that you can update regularly. It's the filing cabinet of this century for teachers, with the added advantage of being a sharable resource when done with that in mind.
Please note that Blogger is used each week as the reflection tool for you to summarize your learning.
